Are lonely people more lonely?

I rode home on the bus today. Of the twenty or thirty people with whom I shared the bus, I think a handful of us were not on a cell phone or listening to portable music players through headphones. So as I sat there watching my fellow travellers I couldn’t help thinking:

Do any of these people think of themselves as travelling with other people? Is there any sense of community in this random gathering?

What does the world look like to someone who is lonely when everyone on the bus is on a cell phone? And when everyone is on a cell phone who are the truly lonely people anyway?

And what is everyone listening to on those headsets?
